We all know the maxim: 'You are what you eat.' But, have you ever wondered how the foods we eat affect our skin tone?
A new study done in Scotland suggests that fruit and vegetable consumption can improve skin tone. Specifically, these foods can alter the redness and yellowness of a person's skin, and the researchers say, these adjustments in tone are linked to attractiveness.
So what's going on?
The researchers in the study, cites the reason for the skin tone changes as being the result of carotenoids, or highly pigmented compounds typically found in a diet rich in vegetables and fruits. Increasing these foods in one's diets can have the desired effect on skin tone.
And what sort of portions are recommended?
The study found that consumption of approximately three portions, sustained over a six-week period, is sufficient to produce perceptible improvements in overall skin health and attractiveness of facial skin.
What specific foods are best?
Carotenoids can be found in a range of fruits and veggies, even ones that are not necessarily red or yellow in color. Red bell peppers, tomatoes and mangoes are all obvious candidates, but even some green veggies can offer a boost for your skin tone.
