The mirror doesn't lie - stress really does show on your skin.
Have you ever looked in the mirror and felt less attractive when you were stressed? Think about how an unsightly blemish shows up on your chin on the morning that you have a huge presentation. Well, it turns out that you were on to something: stress has a negative effect on your skin.
Cortisol, commonly known as the stress hormone, is responsible for some of the skin problems you experience. When you are stressed, your body produces excess cortisol, which then causes your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. More oil then makes it easier for your skin to develop problems. If, for example, you have a skin condition such as rosacea, the symptoms become more aggressive when you are stressed.
Also, when troubles are weighing you down, it is easy to forget to tend to your skin. Without the proper care, your feet will become crusty and you will have chapped hands before you know it. Skin problems may lower one's self-esteem which can cause stress even more. You may not be able to avoid stress entirely, but learning to better handle it will benefit your health and your skin.
First and foremost, get enough sleep. Feeling tired will make you irritable and lower your sense of judgment, which could lead to you saying or doing things that will create even more stress in the long run. The effects of a good night's sleep will be visible as soon as you open your eyes. Your skin will look brighter and you will feel better. That being said, don't skip your evening skin care regimen for an extra few minutes of sleep!
Don't take on every request that comes your way. Sometimes you have to say no, so that you can focus on yourself. If you overburden yourself, you won't be able to spend enough time on any task, and you run the risk of wearing yourself out, making the time you do spend on a task less productive. Always remember to set aside personal time to relax. A few great ways to relieve stress are to join a yoga class or learn to meditate. Exercise can also boost your mood. It releases some positive hormones that counter the stress hormones and clears out your pores, which helps to fight acne and other common blemishes.
Always take care of your skin; like any other personal responsibility, it's not a good idea to ignore it when you've had a bad day. If you stay on top of your skincare regimen, it will be easier to have a better day in the future.
Food can be a great, healthy way to relieve stress, as long as you don't indulge in unhealthy treats. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and increase your water intake to keep your blood sugar stable, and make breakfast a time to reconnect with your loved ones. Sharing your fears or laughing with someone over a warm meal could be all you need to make things better.
